Furnishings & Interior

In 2003 the Montpelier Foundation made the decision to restore the house to the period of James Madison’s retirement from the Presidency. Of course, that choice impacts not just the physical structure, but the interpretation of the interiors as well. In developing an interpretation of the interiors, it is the Foundation’s intent to match the quality of scholarship, planning, and execution that has marked the restoration of the interiors.

Montpelier has two advisory committees - one which consults on the architectural research and restoration and a second which advises on the furnishings and reinterpretation of the mansion.
